The Torment of Separation

“I have bcome into my garden, cmy sister, my bride;
I have gathered my dmyrrh along with my balsam.
I have eaten my honeycomb
Lit with
and my fhoney;
I have gdrunk my wine
Lit with
and my milk.
Eat, ifriends;
Drink and
Or become drunk
imbibe deeply, O lovers.”

BRIDE
I was asleep but my heart was awake.
A voice! My beloved was knocking:
Open to me, lmy sister, my darling,
mMy dove, my perfect one!
For my head is
Lit filled
drenched with dew,
My olocks with the
Lit drops
damp of the night.’
3“I have qtaken off my dress,
How can I put it on again?
I have rwashed my feet,
How can I dirty them again?
4My beloved extended his hand through the opening,
And my
Lit bowels
,
tfeelings were aroused for him.
5I arose to open to my beloved;
And my hands udripped with myrrh,
And my fingers with
Lit passing
liquid myrrh,
On the handles of the bolt.
6I opened to my beloved,
But my beloved had wturned away and had gone!
My
Lit soul
heart went out to him as he yspoke.
I zsearched for him but I did not find him;
I aacalled him but he did not answer me.
7“The abwatchmen who make the rounds in the city found me,
They struck me and wounded me;
The guardsmen of the walls took away my shawl from me.
8“I acadjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
If you find my beloved,
As to what you will tell him:
For adI am lovesick.”

My beloved is dazzling and ajruddy,
Lit Lifted up banner

alOutstanding among ten thousand.
11His head is like gold, pure gold;
His amlocks are like clusters of dates
And black as a raven.
12“His aneyes are like doves
Beside streams of water,
Bathed in milk,
And
Lit sitting upon
reposed in their apsetting.
13His cheeks are like a aqbed of balsam,
Banks of sweet-scented herbs;
His lips are arlilies
asDripping with liquid myrrh.
14His hands are rods of gold
Set with atberyl;
His abdomen is carved ivory
Inlaid with
Lit lapis lazuli
,
avsapphires.
15His legs are pillars of alabaster
Set on pedestals of pure gold;
His appearance is like awLebanon
Choice as the axcedars.
16“His
Lit palate
,
azmouth is full of sweetness.
And he is wholly badesirable.
This is my beloved and this is my friend,
O daughters of Jerusalem.”
